Shopping for Digital Cameras by Gill Critchley
Shopping for a new Digital Camera can be a true challenge. Even if you already own one or more digital cameras, the speed of technology makes it difficult or even impossible to keep up to date. The standards which might have been sophisticated two years ago are now mostly obsolete and would be unsuitable as purchase criteria for a new digital camera.
But if you’ve already experienced the world of digital photography, which now includes Digital Photo frame devices, you have the clear advantage that you know exactly what the purpose of your camera should be. Therefore you can easily narrow down the choices and eventually make an easier decision. There’s no need to spend a months salary on a professional digital SLR camera if you are not an eager enthusiast or do need the camera for business.
If you mainly take snapshots of family events and holidays it makes sense to decide on a compact digital camera which will fit into your pocket anywhere you go. Whereas these small digital cameras often required compromises in the ease of use in the past, this isn’t particularly the case anymore. However, mostly the zoom and auto setting features are less technically advanced as they are with slightly bigger models. Also, the battery life will slightly suffer as well from the miniature design of these models. However, they generally offer good value for money and serve your basic needs.
In case you have bought your last digital camera about four or five years ago you probably won’t have more than 3 mega pixels and an internal memory of about one single GB (Gigabyte). Nowadays, up to 10.0 mega pixels are not even extra ordinary anymore and neither are memory cards with up to 32GB. Basically, the mega pixels determine the resolution and this becomes significantly important if you plan to enlarge the image at some stage. If you want to avoid losing sharpness and brilliance of a picture, you should decide in favour of more mega pixels to avoid disappointments.
A useful feature is the image stabilisation mechanism of digital cameras. It supports the sharpness of images and balances shakes. This technology is often part of the automated settings of the new digital camera generation and makes photography a lot easier for the average photographer.
Moreover, the optical zoom is a good criterion when buying a new digital camera. Whereas 3x zoom was a very sophisticated feature some years ago, the 5x optical zoom is more or less a standard feature now that comes with even less expensive digital cameras. If you like to take close up shots and enjoy the details of a motif then you should particularly pay attention to the optical zoom rather than the digital zoom.
The last important criteria worth mentioning are the components you might already have. If you own a good photo printer, scanner or other camera accessories such as a nice leather bag or an external flash you certainly don’t want to buy all these items again when changing the camera model. If you are satisfied with the components and accessories you have and they are still of good technical quality it’s not worth renewing them.
However, a new camera can only be as good as the components are. If your printer isn’t state of the art anymore the print outs won’t show a better result as well, even if the pictures were taken with the best camera on the market.
Manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, Casio, Kodak and others offer a wide range of digital cameras for all needs and budgets. The advanced technology resulted in dropping retail prices and makes digital photography nowadays affordable for everyone. If you shop around and get informed about the digital cameras you are interested in by reading customer reviews and detailed specifications it shouldn’t be too hard to choose a new camera.
